MSPC mourns passing of former Idaho Governor Dirk Kempthorne

Mountain States Policy Center joins Idaho and the nation in mourning the passing of Governor Dirk Kempthorne—a statesman, a principled leader, and a man whose life was defined by service to others.

Governor Kempthorne’s career in public life spanned decades and reflected a deep and abiding commitment to the people of the American West. From his leadership as Mayor of Boise, to his service as a United States Senator, Governor of Idaho, and U.S. Secretary of the Interior, he approached every role with humility, conviction, and a steady sense of purpose.

In March, we had the distinct honor of honoring Governor Kempthorne with the Elevation Award—our organization’s highest honor. In that moment, we recognized not only his extraordinary record of leadership, but the character behind it: a leader who elevated others, strengthened institutions, and inspired generations.

Those who heard him speak that evening witnessed what defined Governor Kempthorne throughout his life—a gracious spirit, a deep love for Idaho, and an unwavering belief in the power of principled leadership.

Even in the face of recent health challenges, he demonstrated the same courage and resolve that marked his decades in public service. His strength was evident, his optimism unmistakable, and his commitment to others undiminished.

“Dirk Kempthorne represented the very best of public service,” said MSPC President Chris Cargill. “He led with integrity, treated people with respect, and left a lasting mark on our state and our country. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to honor him and to know him.”

As Idaho lowers its flags in remembrance, we reflect on a legacy that will endure far beyond a lifetime—a legacy of leadership rooted in service, guided by principle, and carried forward by those he inspired.
