MSPC awarded National Civics Prize

Mountain States Policy Center has been named a recipient of the 2026 Civics Prize from the State Policy Network (SPN), recognizing the organization's innovative efforts to strengthen civics education and prepare the next generation of informed, engaged citizens across the Mountain West.
The national award recognizes MSPC's "We the Students" Civics Bowl, a fast-paced, buzzer-based competition that moves civic education beyond memorization and into active learning. The program challenges high school students on American government, constitutional principles, free enterprise, and individual rights while encouraging teamwork, critical thinking, and civic engagement.
"Civic education is about much more than passing a test," said Chris Cargill, President of Mountain States Policy Center. "Our goal is to inspire students to understand the principles that make self-government possible and give them opportunities to put that knowledge into action. We're honored that State Policy Network recognized that vision."
The SPN Civics Prize recognizes organizations developing practical, innovative approaches that help students better understand the institutions, freedoms, and responsibilities necessary for a thriving constitutional republic.
In announcing the award, SPN highlighted Mountain States Policy Center's work in making civics "active and competitive," giving students a reason to study, collaborate, and apply their knowledge in meaningful ways.
"This recognition is certainly an honor," Cargill said. "But more importantly, it reinforces that thoughtful, practical solutions can make a real difference for students, families, and communities throughout Idaho, Montana, Washington, and Wyoming."
The award also provides additional support to help expand the organization's civics education efforts throughout the region.
Mountain States Policy Center credited its supporters for making the program possible.
"Every research project, partnership, and educational initiative we undertake is built on the generosity of people who believe our region deserves policies that expand opportunity and strengthen our communities," Cargill said. "This award belongs just as much to them as it does to us."
Mountain States Policy Center plans to continue expanding its civics programming by equipping educators, policymakers, and community leaders with resources that strengthen civic knowledge and encourage informed citizenship.
